However, not all metals are quoted on the Stock Exchange; this means that it is necessary to make use of different sources in order to properly assess the value of a well-defined stainless steel alloy.

Market and demand; which is the market’s state of health? Are we experiencing expansion or stagnation and what are the prospects? This aspect is influencing the trend of scrap prices in terms of sector, but also - and maybe even more clearly - at the level of every single stainless steel alloy, whose production trend severely affects the price determination of the scrap necessary for its production. The price changes brought about by this aspect may be wider and more sudden than you can imagine.

Origin as regards both the material quality and the transport costs that may considerably affect the final price; origin is a key factor. Moreover, while making reference to the paragraphs above, the quotations of some alloys may vary from country to country according to their use in a well-defined market, at a well-defined time and according to the method of calculating prices in a given marketplace.

Material quality; the state of cleanliness, the scrap size, cutting and consistency of the alloy may affect the scrap value and bring about considerable differences in price. If we are able to direct scrap towards a production process that can reproduce the same alloy or a very similar one, this means making the most of all the elements present in scrap.

Relations; “Last but not least”, even a relationship of trust has an impact on price. Established relationships, reputation, specialisation in the trade of well-defined materials are of fundamental importance in negotiations involving the handling of large quantities of materials (and amounts of money) on worldwide markets.
