Hafnium
Purchase of hafnium scrap in all formats: bar cut pieces and crystal bar, turnings, offcuts and cut-offs, electrodes and inserts from plasma cutting. Fast quotations and collection across Europe.
Metallic hafnium (element Hf): a dense refractory metal with a melting point of about 2233 °C, excellent corrosion resistance and a very high neutron capture cross-section. Reference markets: nuclear, aerospace superalloys, plasma cutting and semiconductors.
- Forms bars · turnings · offcuts · plasma inserts
- Density 13.31 g/cm³
- Melting ≈ 2233 °C
Main elements
| Hafnium + Zirconium (Hf + Zr) | ≥ 99.8 % |
|---|---|
| Zirconium (Zr) | 0.5 – 4.5 % (commercial grades) |
| Zirconium (Zr) – nuclear grade | ≤ 1.0 % |
| Impurities (Fe, O, Nb, Ti) | traces |
Indicative values: commercial hafnium always contains residual zirconium; the Zr content distinguishes the grades (nuclear vs commercial) and affects the valuation. The quality is certified by analysis for each batch.
Physical and mechanical data
| Density | 13.31 g/cm³ |
|---|---|
| Melting temperature | ≈ 2233 °C |
| Hardness | ≈ 150 – 180 HV (annealed) |
| Neutron capture cross-section | ≈ 105 barn (very high) |
| Corrosion resistance | excellent in water, steam and acids (passivating oxide layer) |
| Structure | hexagonal close-packed (HCP) |
Zirconium and oxygen content determines the mechanical properties and the value of the batch.
